I would peel pomegranates for you

Painting of a hand holding up a pomegranate.

By Hajir Butt

They peel oranges
Tear sweet flesh with care
Their hands will smell like garden and citrus
The juice joyful and childish
Kind to the palette
Sun in from the windows
Orange peels on the counter

But for you my dear,
I would peel pomegranates for you
Break hard shells with messy truths
Stain my fingertips and white shirt red
Splatter counters and kitchen walls
Seeds in teeth like hidden gems
Heartbeats dripping ruby all over the kitchen
For you, I would
