To Be Seen: South Asian Women Take Up Space in Toronto

By Riadh Team

Something comforting, yet rare unfolded last Saturday afternoon in Toronto. Hundreds of people lined up outside, not just for a pop-up, a photo opportunity or a chance to meet their favourite influencers, but for something deeper: a community woven together by culture, connection and the desire to reconnect with their roots.

Three South Asian women had already made names for themselves—but more than that, they built businesses that extended far beyond just their titles.

We asked them one question: How does it feel to be seen?

The Kismet Reserve

Mina Hasan: It feels so heartwarming and welcoming to know that—even though I’m from Boston, from another country—people are coming out here and lining up just for my random little watch drops, you know? They’re here just to support me and the other girls. That’s really sweet. I think it’s just one example of how a beautiful, wholesome event like this can really bring the whole community together.

Zainab Raza: Honestly, I don’t even have words for it. I’m so overwhelmed by the support from this community, from Mina’s [The Kismet Reserve] community, Aliza’s [Aliza Beauty Co] community and Sana’s [Love Closely] community. It’s been ridiculous. I felt this way at my last pop-up too, where I just—I couldn’t even understand that there were people who saw my work, resonated with it and felt like it was something they wanted to be part of. I’m just so grateful and so full of joy. I don’t really have any other words.

Aliza Beauty

Aliza Shan: Overwhelming and grateful — that’s it. When I started out on TikTok, it was weird because being on the internet, you’re kind of just by yourself. And then when you go out and actually see people, I think, oh my God, people actually know who I am. The turnout has been amazing. I can’t believe this many people came for us. I’m just so grateful and I’m happy that we’re doing this together, especially as brown girls.
